Summer Camp Opportunities
Leadership Doesn’t Stop When School Ends
Each summer, MCJROTC cadets have access to a wide range of unique summer experiences—from our own Spartan Camp in Romeoville to leadership, STEM, physical fitness, and college-based programs across the country.
Thanks to generous donors and program supporters, nearly all of these opportunities are offered to cadets with admission fees sponsored, helping make exceptional summer experiences accessible to our students and their families.
These camps extend leadership development beyond the school year, challenging cadets to build confidence, independence, teamwork, and new skills while discovering what they are capable of.
Explore the summer opportunities available to our cadets below.
Romeoville MCJROTC Spartan Camp
Romeoville High School
Romeoville, Illinois
Our own two-week Spartan Camp combines leadership, adventure, team building, and plenty of summer fun while bringing new and returning cadets together before the school year begins.
Incoming cadets get a head start on MCJROTC through hands-on instruction from experienced cadets, learning the basics of drill, physical fitness, archery, air rifle, leadership, and teamwork in a welcoming environment. Returning cadets strengthen their own leadership skills while helping welcome and mentor the newest members of the program.
Camp also includes optional excursions and adventures that have included Six Flags, Legacy Paintball, and The Forge, giving cadets plenty of opportunities to challenge themselves, make friends, and create lasting memories.
Each cadet receives daily lunch and a Spartan Camp T-shirt, with flexible camp pricing based on the excursions selected. The experience concludes with our Spartan Camp Family BBQ, where new and returning families come together for food, outdoor games, and even opportunities for parents to try activities such as archery and air rifle.
For incoming cadets especially, Spartan Camp is a chance to begin high school with something invaluable already in place: familiar faces, new friendships, greater confidence, and a team ready to welcome them on the first day.
MCJROTC Cyber STEM Camp
Randolph-Macon Academy
Front Royal, Virginia
Hosted on the campus of Randolph-Macon Academy, this one-week, immersive summer camp combines robotics, aeronautics, coding, computer science, and hands-on AI with leadership development and physical training.
Cadets live on the private boarding school campus and learn from military and civilian instructors and industry professionals. A highlight of the program is VAULT, a hands-on project where cadets build and configure their own private AI assistant while learning how artificial intelligence can be applied in real-world environments.
Cadets who successfully complete the program also earn three college credits.
Program tuition, housing, and meals are provided. Families are responsible only for airfare/transportation to and from Virginia.
Camp Outdoor Odyssey — Leadership Camp
Boswell, Pennsylvania
Designed for experienced and highly motivated JROTC cadets, Camp Outdoor Odyssey is an intensive high-adventure experience that develops leadership through physical challenge, teamwork, and the outdoors.
Guided by camp staff and U.S. Naval Academy Midshipmen, cadets participate in hiking, running, high ropes courses, whitewater rafting, physical training, and team-building challenges, with primitive outdoor sleeping arrangements adding to the experience.
Throughout the camp, cadets are challenged to grow from leading themselves to leading and supporting a team, building confidence, resilience, and leadership skills they can bring back to their home programs.
Camp programming, lodging, and meals are provided by MCJROTC supporters. Families are responsible for transportation to and from the designated Pittsburgh-area pickup.
ALA Illini Girls State
Eastern Illinois University
Charleston, Illinois
Sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, a valued supporter of our MCJROTC program, ALA Illini Girls State is a week-long leadership and civic engagement experience for high school girls from across Illinois.
Participants build their own simulated government—running for office, electing leaders, drafting and debating legislation, and serving in roles ranging from mayor to governor and state legislator. Along the way, they strengthen skills in leadership, public speaking, collaboration, citizenship, and civic responsibility while learning directly from veterans, community leaders, and their peers.
Since 1937, Girls State has helped prepare generations of young women to become confident, informed and engaged leaders in their communities.
American Legion Illinois Premier Boys State
Eastern Illinois University
Charleston, Illinois
Founded in Illinois in 1935, American Legion Premier Boys State is a week-long leadership and civic engagement program where high school juniors learn about government by actually running it.
Participants create their own simulated city, county, and state governments, running for office, holding elections, debating legislation, and taking part in hands-on activities that build leadership, public speaking, citizenship, and collaboration skills. The residential program also gives students a taste of college life while connecting them with peers from across Illinois.
Each year, our MCJROTC program sends male cadets to Boys State with registration, housing, and meal costs generously sponsored by our local American Legion and program supporters.
College Orientation Workshop (COW)
Virginia Military Institute (VMI)
Lexington, Virginia
Founded in 1985, VMI’s College Orientation Workshop (COW) is a four-week summer enrichment program for rising 10th–12th grade male minority students. Limited to just 30 participants each year, the program helps young men build confidence, leadership, independence, and a strong work ethic while preparing them for success in high school, college, and beyond.
Students live and learn in the VMI college environment while participating in academic instruction, physical training, swimming, rappelling, kayaking, camping, hiking, community service, leadership development, and guest speaker sessions.
There is no obligation to attend VMI after completing the program, and transportation to and from VMI is the only cost to participating families.
